Adjutant Generals Past to Present

The State Adjutant General is the commander of the State’s Military Department and reports to the Governor. There is no mandated limitation to term of service. The selection process for Adjutant General has changed over the years. In the early years, an officer was selected by his peers to serve as the Adjutant General and could jump several ranks. Several Adjutant Generals resigned and reverted to their previous rank. Currently the position is filled from a pool of Brigadier Generals.

MG Daugherty is the 36th Adjutant General since 1855 including BG Thompson who has served as Adjutant General three separate times.
